[description] => Mary Dell Lucas, the owner and director of Far Horizons Archaeological and Cultural Trips, has had several careers. From 1965-1976, she was a flight attendant for American Airlines and took advantage of her travel privileges to frequently climb aboard an airplane bound for far off places…often with a pack on her back. She quickly became aware that her travels always took her to remote spots in the far reaches of the world to discover ruins left behind by former civilizations, and in 1977 she went back to school to study archaeology. While attending school, she worked on three different archaeological projects in Belize, and spent two months each year driving her VW camper back and forth to that Central American country. In 1983, she started Far Horizons. In the almost thirty years that her company has been in business, Mary Dell has never lost her enthusiasm for exploring the remains left by former civilizations, learning about the peoples that make up the living cultures of today, and sharing this enthusiasm with participants on Far Horizons trips. Her strongest belief is that travel (done the Far Horizons way!) allows us to learn about the similarities, rather than the differences, between the citizens of different nations.

How I Came to Know Belize

    October 10th, 2011

When one of my professors asked me ‘Would you like to work on an archaeological project in Belize?’, my first thought was, ‘Belize – where’s that?’  But one of my excavator friends had worked there the year before, loved the country and the project… and had a van, so I agreed to drive down with her. What an adventure – two single women (solas!) in 1978 driving from California through macho Mexico, the untamed Yucatan Peninsula, and across the border into Belize, on our own. But don’t let me digress… Read the rest of this entry “

    Mdina Walled City

For such a tiny island country, Malta is without a doubt one of the most interesting places in the world. Its location in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea has made it accessible to many different groups of people. Pottery found here by archeologists suggests that the Maltese Islands were first settled in 5200 BC mainly by Stone Age hunters or farmers Read the rest of this entry “
