Far Horizons New Year's Eve 2008
…or we built a well!

By Tita Hyland

On the Far Horizons Cambodia trip in December, we were driving around Siem Reap to visit the incredible temples, and we noticed large signs in many yards crediting various individuals, companies and groups with drilling fresh water wells. We asked our guide about this well project and learned that most wells are not drilled deep enough to yield clean water and that the contaminated water results in disease which contributes to the high infant mortality rate in Cambodia. We inquired about the cost of drilling a well and learned that it would be $25 for each of the twelve of us in our group. Our guide recommended we drill one outside Siem Reap where there are fewer clean water wells. That made it a little more expensive, but filled a greater need. He contacted a person who would do the drilling and he came and spoke to our group. We named our project the ‘Far Horizons New Year's Eve 2008’.  As a group we wanted to give something back to the community who lives in a part of the world desperately in need of clean water and where we had experienced such a remarkable introduction to Khmer culture.
