Join
Far Horizons Archaeological and Cultural Trips for a unique adventure
to the heart of history and prehistory. Experience a wide range
of journeys to sites where the boundaries of archaeological knowledge
are being tested and pushed ever outward. We offer you adventure,
education, camaraderie and a new understanding of the world's
cultures - both past and present.
Founded
by a Maya archaeologist in 1982, Far Horizons Archaeological and
Cultural Trips designs tours in countries that have a significant
archaeological and indigenous heritage. We specialize in personal
contacts and scholarly depth to allow our participants to gain
a deeper knowledge of both past and living cultures. Several of
the Far Horizons staff are former archaeologists and anthropologists,
and all our trips have an archaeological, historical, and/or cultural
emphasis. Our destinations include England,
Scotland, Sicily,
Sardinia, Malta,
Greece, Turkey,
Iran,
Syria, Jordan,
Egypt, Libya,
Ethiopia, Mexico
(Oaxaca, Yucatan), Honduras,
Guatemala, Peru, Chile
and Easter Island, Cambodia,
Laos, India,
and the Silk
Road in China. In each of them, we include truly extraordinary
experiences.

As a tour company that benefits from the cultural and natural
riches of our destinations, we have a policy of donating to the
archaeological projects and museums we visit. This has created
a bond with the academic community that has helped us establish
an extensive list of lecturers and contacts at each of our destinations.
Because of our excellent relationships with scientists throughout
the world, we are able to design trips that are truly unique.
On a Far Horizons journey, you will enjoy private lectures or
tours of archaeological sites by project directors or staff, partake
in such special events as gala dinner parties attended by area
archaeologists, or participate in active adventures, such as hiking
the Inka Trail with a renowned archaeologist or traveling along
the southern coast of Turkey in a yacht.
Among our many clients are Brown University, The University of
Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, UCLA Extension,
and the National Endowment for the Humanities. As a special interest
tour company we fulfill a unique niche in the market. We have
been recommended in articles in the New York Times, the Christian
Science Monitor, the Toronto Globe and Mail, Sunset Magazine,
Vogue Magazine, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and
many other magazines, books, guide books, and periodicals. Twice
in the past few years, one of our trips has made the Los Angeles
Times list of "Top Ten Trips of the Year." And Forbes
Magazine has named Far Horizons Archaeological and Cultural Trips
as one of the top 100 web sites. According to the Forbes staff,
they reviewed nearly 3,000 sites in 150 categories-from tax planning
to sailing to cigars. Far Horizons was chosen as number three
under Cultural Travel. Please note what they say about our study
leaders!
Forbes'
Review:
Watch
the sunrise at Machu Picchu or tour the ancient Cambodian
palace of Angkor Wat. This site offers up-close tours of
the world's ancient wonders led by distinguished anthropologists
and archeaologists. Particularly strong offerings in Mexico,
Central America, Iran and Turkey. |
We believe that to truly understand an area of the world, it is
important not to be just an "observer" of another culture;
we must be as much of a participant within that culture as is
possible within the confines of the trip. We must explore how
the people live today, the challenges they face, their traditions,
their goals and their political environment. We limit the size
of Far Horizons' groups to enable participants to dine in celebrated
restaurants and spend overnights in small, bed and breakfast-type
accommodations that depict the charm of the country. Frequently
these establishments are housed in charming, restored historic
buildings - haciendas in Mexico and Peru, Ottoman mansions and
castles in Turkey, a caravanseray in Iran, and palaces in Tunisia,
India, and Jordan. During a Far Horizons trip, you will dine on
the local delicacies, drink traditional beverages, learn something
of the languages, and travel to areas rarely visited by tourists.
Our study leaders, local guides and tour managers are picked for
their expertise in a given area and for their congeniality as
traveling companions. This is a vacation after all.
We at Far Horizons take pride in our knowledge of each of our
destinations. Our years of experience, proven logistical capabilities,
and exceptional knowledge of the most remote areas and cultures
makes Far Horizons the ideal company to assist you in your journey.
Our contacts among the peoples of our destinations, and the scientists
that work in each of them, make each of our unique trips a very
special and exciting experience.
Experience for yourself the excitement of archaeological discovery!
Feel free to ask us for a list of former participants.
