Eric Tagliacozzo received his B.A. from Haverford College, his Ph.D. (with Distinction) from Yale University, and is currently the John Stambaugh Professor of History at Cornell University. Dr. Taliacozzo was the recipient of the Stephen and Margery Russell Teaching Prize and was cited as one of the top 10 professors at Cornell (out of more than 2,000) in an article in Business Insider.
Professor Tagliacozzo is one of the leading historians of maritime Asia. His scholarship (in fifteen books) traces the connections forged across Asia’s seas over the past five centuries. And his volume Chinese Circulations: Capital, Commodities, and Networks in Southeast Asia follows Chinese merchants, goods, and migrants out of China and into the wider world – the very currents flowing out of the harbors you will be visiting. An award-winning teacher who has spent his career studying these ports from both Chinese and larger Asian vantages, Eric offers an uncommon way to see China: from the sea inward.
